Authorities in Iowa have arrested a woman who is believed to be a person of interest in the homicide case of 76-year-old Gary Lehmeyer from Faribault. Arlene Bell, 32, was apprehended by an Iowa state trooper around 11:30 a.m. on Monday. The arrest was made in Dallas County, Iowa, on Interstate 80, where Bell was found driving Lehmeyer’s vehicle, which had been reported missing when his body was discovered in his home by Faribault police later that day.
Further investigation unveiled evidence in the stolen vehicle that pointed towards Bell as the culprit. As a result, the Rice County Attorney’s Office has issued a warrant for her arrest and extradition on charges of motor vehicle theft. However, authorities have also labeled Bell as a person of interest in Lehmeyer’s death.
“Our investigation has revealed that this was not a random crime, as Bell and Lehmeyer were involved in a legally qualifying domestic relationship at the time of his death,” stated a release from the Faribault Police Department.
The body of Gary Lehmeyer was discovered on February 5th at approximately 2:15 p.m. Authorities were dispatched to his residence for a welfare check, where they found him deceased. Faribault Police Chief John Sherwin confirmed that Lehmeyer had “wounds consistent with trauma to the body,” although no further details regarding the cause of death have been released at this time.
Arlene Bell, who remains in custody in Iowa, will face charges related to motor vehicle theft before being extradited to Rice County to face further legal proceedings in connection with the homicide investigation.
