The president of Prestige Lakeside Habitat and six others have been arrested by the Varthur police on Saturday. They are being charged for the death of nine-year-old Manya Damerla, who tragically passed away in the swimming pool due to electrocution in December last year.
On the unfortunate day of December 29, 2023, Manya was playing near the pool around 7.30 p.m. when she accidentally fell into the water. Despite efforts to rescue her, she was rushed to a private hospital where the doctors pronounced her dead. Following the incident, Manya’s father, Rajesh Kumar Damerla, lodged a complaint stating that despite raising concerns about electric shocks and notifying the maintenance staff and electrician, no safety measures were taken, leading to the tragic loss of his daughter’s life.
The primary accused in this case has been identified as Debashish Sinha, a 37-year-old who serves as the president of the Home Owners’ Association of Prestige Lakeside Habitat. Additionally, six others have also been taken into custody, including Safiq Rao, the 44-year-old vice-president of Prestige Property Management. The arrested individuals also include electricians, senior technicians, and members of the swimming pool management team, namely Santosh Maharana, Gobinda Mandal, Bikas Kumar Paridha, Bhaktha Charan Pradhan, and Suresh Babu. They have been charged under Section 149 (member of unlawful assembly guilty of an offense) and Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
Investigation agencies have revealed that the apartment management and electricians were aware of the presence of live electric current in the swimming pool but failed to implement proper safety measures to prevent any potential danger. Tragically, as Manya stepped into the pool, she was immediately electrocuted, leading to her untimely demise, as confirmed by the police officials.
In response to this devastating incident, residents of the apartment complex located off the Varthur-Gunjur road have organized a protest demanding immediate action against the responsible parties. The community seeks justice for Manya and aims to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.
