LEXINGTON, Va. (WFXR)– The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) has confirmed that one of its alumni, Captain Jack Casey, was among the five Marines who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash during a training flight in San Diego, California on Wednesday, February 8.
The news was shared by VMI through a Facebook post, expressing their deep condolences. Captain Casey, who graduated from VMI in 2019, majored in physics during his time at the institute. He was not only an outstanding student but also a remarkable leader, having been named Company 1 commander in the 2018-19 academic year.
At the time of the accident, Captain Casey was assigned to the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft 16, and 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar.
In a statement shared by VMI, Captain Eli Facemire, who was the class president in 2019 and graduated alongside Captain Casey, expressed his grief and admiration for his fellow classmate.
“In the wake of such a devastating loss, it is hard to find the right words. Jack was deeply loved by our entire class, and his love for his fellow classmates was evident. He fully invested himself in his relationships and opportunities, serving as a role model for friendship and leadership not only for the lower classes but also for his fellow classmates. His charisma and humility were evident in all that he did, and his infectious, fun-loving nature made him an absolute joy to be around. He left a positive impact on everyone he encountered, and we will forever cherish the memories we have of him. As a class, we stand in solidarity with his loved ones and his fellow classmates who knew him best. In these difficult times, we must rekindle and embrace the ‘brother rat spirit’ that Jack embodied.”
