Former Florida Women’s Tennis Coach Andy Brandi Passes Away at 72
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The tennis community mourns the loss of former Florida women’s tennis coach, Andy Brandi, who passed away at the age of 72. Brandi, known for his exceptional coaching abilities, led the team to incredible success during his 17-year tenure. He passed away on Thursday in Boca Raton after battling an illness.
A Legacy of Triumphs
Under Brandi’s guidance, the Florida Gators achieved remarkable accomplishments in the world of collegiate tennis. Throughout his career, Brandi’s teams secured a remarkable .914 winning percentage, claiming three national championships in 1992, ’96, and ’98. Additionally, the team dominated the Southeastern Conference, clinching 14 regular-season titles and 10 conference tournament crowns.
Former Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley expressed his admiration for Brandi, stating, “Simply put, Andy Brandi was a winner in every sense of the word. He was one of my all-time favorite coaches here.”
Brandi’s outstanding coaching abilities earned him a prestigious place in the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. His remarkable win-loss record of 460-43 during his coaching career is a testament to his dedication and expertise.
A Life Devoted to Tennis
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1952, Brandi developed a passion for tennis at an early age. He attended Trinity College in San Antonio, Texas, where he showcased his talent as a member of the men’s tennis team. After graduating with a business degree, Brandi transitioned into coaching and found great success.
His career took a significant turn when he became the executive director at the IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton. It was during this time that Florida recognized his immense potential and appointed him as the women’s tennis coach at the age of 33.
A Lasting Impact
Despite retiring in 2001, Brandi’s passion for tennis remained strong. In 2017, he came out of retirement to join his son as co-head coach for the LSU men’s team. For five seasons, he continued to inspire young athletes and contribute to the sport he loved.
Andy Brandi leaves behind a legacy of excellence and a profound impact on the tennis community. His dedication, knowledge, and ability to inspire will be remembered by all who had the privilege of working with him.
