A 15-year-old boy, who allegedly shot a Brazilian tourist in the leg in Times Square on Thursday (Feb 8) before firing at a police officer during his escape, has been apprehended just outside of New York City on Friday. The police, as reported by the news agency Associated Press, have identified the teenager as Jesus Alejandro Rivas-Figureoa. The arrest took place at a residential house in Yonkers, which authorities believe may be connected to a family member, almost 24 hours after the shooting.
The incident unfolded within a sporting goods store and quickly spilled out onto the bustling streets of Midtown Manhattan. New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban, while addressing the media, expressed relief that no one suffered severe injuries in the chaotic episode.
Prior to the arrest, law enforcement officials had already identified the suspect as a resident of a migrant shelter located in Manhattan. The 15-year-old had arrived in New York from Venezuela in 2023. Furthermore, the boy is also under suspicion for an armed robbery that occurred in the Bronx, as well as another shooting incident in Times Square in January.
