Peter MacGregor: A Stalwart of the British Folk Music Scene
Peter MacGregor, a beloved figure in the English folk music scene, passed away on January 27 at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. He was undergoing cancer treatment when he succumbed to a chest infection. His death has left a void in the hearts of those who knew and admired him.

Throughout his life, Peter MacGregor made significant contributions to the folk music community. He was not only a talented performer but also a folk club organizer and sound-desk expert. His dedication to the genre was unparalleled, and his impact on the local scene in Bath, Bradford on Avon, and Trowbridge will never be forgotten.
Born in October 1942 in Dorking, Surrey, during the Second World War, Peter had a deep connection to his Scottish heritage. Despite his birthplace, he always identified himself as Scottish, thanks to his father’s roots in the Isle of Lewis. It was during his time at Edinburgh University in the early 1960s that Peter fell in love with the rich Scottish ballads. Influenced by renowned singers Jimmy MacBeath and Jean Redpath, he began incorporating these ballads into his repertoire.
Peter’s musical journey led him from London to the West Country, where he formed the successful trio Chanticleer. Alongside his first wife Mary MacGregor and Dave Galloway, the trio performed traditional English songs that captivated audiences. Their harmonious voices and heartfelt renditions made them a standout act.
In addition to his own musical pursuits, Peter dedicated himself to supporting and nurturing the folk music community. He ran the Bath Traditional Folk Club at The Hat and Feather, initially with Mary and later with his second wife Rosie Upton (aka MacGregor). After the club closed in the late 1970s, Peter and Rosie established the BoA Folk Club in Bradford on Avon.
Peter’s involvement with the iconic Village Pump folk club and festival in Trowbridge became a defining chapter in his life. He became an integral part of the club and festival, showcasing his talent and enriching the local music scene. In November 2020, he handed over the management of The Village Pump folk club to Kieran Moore, solidifying his lasting legacy.
Alongside his passion for folk music, Peter also pursued a career as an industrial chemist and later taught in the polymers department at Trowbridge College. His expertise and dedication in the field were commendable.
Beyond music and chemistry, Peter had a deep love for rugby and served as a director of the Bradford on Avon Rugby Football Club. He actively encouraged young players to participate in the sport, exemplifying his commitment to community involvement.
Peter MacGregor is survived by his wife Rosie, two sons, Doug and Ruari, and two granddaughters, Effie and Lola. His legacy of music, warmth, and wit will continue to inspire generations to come.
A Fond Farewell
A funeral service to honor and remember Peter MacGregor will take place on Tuesday, February 20 at 11.45am at the West Wiltshire Crematorium in Semington. Family, friends, and fans are invited to pay their final respects to this beloved figure of the British folk music scene.
