Kevin Williams Obituary – Cause of Death News : “Colorado Attorney’s Legacy: Advocate for Disabled Passes”

Colorado civil rights attorney Kevin Williams, known for his tireless efforts to improve the lives of people with disabilities, passed away this week at the age of 57. His death occurred after a brief illness, according to colleagues at the Denver-based Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition, where Williams had been leading the legal program since 1997.

A Champion for Accessibility and Equality

Williams, who became quadriplegic following a car accident at the age of 19, dedicated his career to fighting for the rights of disabled individuals. He utilized his legal expertise to file lawsuits and advocate for the enforcement of laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act, and the Fair Housing Act.

During his time as a law student at the University of Denver, Williams made headlines by suing his own law school for non-compliance with the ADA. His victory in the case led to significant improvements, including a wheelchair-accessible graduation venue.

Throughout his career, Williams continued to expand access for disabled Coloradans in various public spaces, including stores, restaurants, public transit systems, theaters, arenas, and travel pathways. His legal actions compelled Red Rocks Amphitheatre to provide accessible parking, seating, and ticketing, among other changes.

In addition to his own work, Williams mentored and inspired other lawyers to join the fight for disability rights.

A Life of Purpose and Passion

Originally from the suburbs of Cleveland, Williams moved to Colorado in 1990, the same year the ADA was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush. He embraced the state as his home and enjoyed activities such as driving in the mountains, attending concerts, and exploring local breweries and distilleries.

Friends and colleagues remember Williams as a passionate advocate for civil rights. Andrew Montoya, who worked with him in the coalition’s legal program, described him as contemplative, thorough, and dedicated to leaving no stone unturned in his litigation efforts.

Williams had a unique ability to find humor in difficult situations. He famously adapted the lyrics of the Beatles’ song “Let It Be” into a rendition called “Let Us Pee,” which brought lightheartedness to the challenges faced by people with disabilities.

Julie Reiskin, co-executive director of the Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition, highlighted Williams’ motivation to fight against discrimination and protect the rights of individuals with disabilities. He was driven by the desire to see the laws that should safeguard them being enforced, and he was disheartened by the excuses made by courts and lawyers who failed to address the problem.

A Lasting Legacy

Colorado has lost a true champion for disability rights with the passing of Kevin Williams. His unwavering dedication and commitment to creating a more accessible and equal society will continue to inspire future generations.
