The music world mourns the loss of Henry Fambrough, the last surviving member of the iconic R&B group, The Spinners.

Henry Fambrough, a founding member of The Spinners, passed away at the age of 85. His family confirmed his death, stating that he died of natural causes on 7th February 2024 at his home in North Virginia. Fambrough had been admitted to a hospice in January.

Fambrough, along with Billy Henderson, Pervis Jackson, C.P. Spencer, and James Edwards, formed the vocal group The Domingoes in 1954. Eventually, they transformed into The Spinners in 1961, with George Dixon and Bobby Smith replacing Edwards and Spencer. Smith would go on to sing lead vocals on most of their hit songs.

While signed to Berry Gordy’s Motown Records in the 1960s, The Spinners achieved moderate success. However, it was after they left Motown and re-signed with Atlantic Records that they reached the peak of their commercial success.

The Spinners went on to record numerous hit records, including “I’ll Be Around,” “It’s A Shame,” “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love,” and “The Rubberband Man.”

Henry Fambrough retired from the group last year but was fortunate enough to witness The Spinners’ induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.

Their musical legacy was also celebrated at the Motown Museum in Detroit, with a series of events held over a weekend last year.

Reflecting on The Spinners’ induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Fambrough expressed his joy to Billboard, saying, “It feels great. It really does. I just wish all the other guys were here to see it. It really is a great honor.”

While Fambrough was the only original member of the group to witness this prestigious honor, he emphasized the importance of carrying on and being grateful for the recognition.
