Background and Biography

Aurora, the majestic horse that led the Queen’s funeral procession on the Long Walk to Windsor Castle, has sadly passed away at the age of 13. Known affectionately as Doris by officials, Aurora had a remarkable career and touched the lives of many during her time in service.

Service and Accomplishments

Aurora’s notable duties included leading the procession at Harry and Meghan’s wedding, attending football matches, music concerts, and accompanying the royal family at Royal Ascot. Standing at an impressive height of 6ft, she joined the Thames Valley Police (TVP) where she served until her retirement from the Horse Trust due to a lameness diagnosis.

The TVP Mounted Section fondly remembers Aurora’s sweet nature and her role in leading the late Queen’s funeral procession down the Long Walk. They expressed their gratitude to the Horse Trust for providing Aurora with a wonderful retirement.

The Horse Trust, where Aurora spent her final years, described her immediate connection with the team and supporters who visited the farm. Her calm and gentle nature allowed her to fit right into the retirement herd and make friends with both horses and humans alike.

Aurora’s Impact and Legacy

Aurora’s striking size, beauty, and gentle personality made her a popular attraction for visitors at the Horse Trust. She was always ready to greet them, eagerly awaiting cuddles and admiration. The 18-hand-tall gray Shire horse stood out like a magnificent marble statue, capturing the hearts of all who encountered her.

Cause of death

Unfortunately, Aurora suffered a torn ligament, and due to her other diagnoses and immense size, treatment options were severely limited. The only available treatment would have greatly impacted her quality of life. Therefore, the difficult decision was made to allow Aurora to find peace and cross the Rainbow Bridge without pain.

Remembering Aurora

Aurora’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her. Her contributions to important events and her gentle nature will be cherished and remembered for years to come. The Horse Trust and the TVP Mounted Section are grateful for the opportunity to have had Aurora in their lives and extend their final words: “Gallop pain free, sweet girl, and thank you for your service.”
