William “Dud” Lastrapes, Jr. Passes Away at 94

Arrangements are currently being made for the funeral of William “Dud” Lastrapes, Jr., who sadly passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, in Lafayette at the age of 94. The Martin & Castille Funeral Home Downtown has been entrusted with organizing the arrangements for his final farewell.

A Life of Service and Leadership

William Dudley Lastrapes Jr., affectionately known as “Dud,” was a prominent figure in the city of Lafayette. According to our media partners at The Advocate, he served as the mayor of Lafayette from 1980 to 1992, prior to the implementation of the consolidated form of government that exists today.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Lastrapes spent his formative years in Opelousas before pursuing higher education at what was then known as Southwest Louisiana Institute, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English and communications, showcasing his passion for language and effective communication.

Lastrapes also dedicated four years of his life to serving in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Korea. His commitment to his country exemplified his strong sense of duty and honor.

A Journey into Politics

Prior to entering politics, Lastrapes worked in the broadcasting industry from 1955 until 1970. However, he felt a calling to make a difference in his community and transitioned into a career in public service.

In 1972, Lastrapes joined the Lafayette Parish School Board, where he diligently served until 1980. It was during this time that he made the decision to run for mayor, ultimately defeating Mayor Kenny Bowen to secure the position.
