A native of Barnesville, Georgia, Hicks was widely regarded as one of the greatest running backs in South Carolina State’s history, according to Sports Illustrated’s HBCU Legends. Despite playing only three seasons, he managed to become the university’s second all-time rushing leader, accumulating almost 4,100 yards on the ground.

Hicks held several records at South Carolina State, including most rushing touchdowns in a single season (22) and in a career (51). He also held the distinction of being the career rushing leader in yards per game, averaging an impressive 127.9 yards.

South Carolina State’s Most-Honored Player

Throughout his time at South Carolina State, Hicks was widely recognized for his outstanding performance on the field. The Orangeburg Time and Democrat referred to him as one of the university’s most-honored players. He was a first-team All-MEAC player for three consecutive years and was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year in 1995. Additionally, he received the title of I-AA All-American by the Associated Press for two years during his college career.

In 2007, Hicks was honored once again as a member of South Carolina State University’s Centennial (1907-2007) Football Team. In 2014, he was inducted into South Carolina State’s Hall of Fame, solidifying his esteemed status within the university’s football history.

Transition to the Professional League

After an impressive college career, Hicks was selected by the Chicago Bears in the seventh round of the 1996 NFL Draft. He went on to play two seasons with the Bears, showcasing his skills on the professional stage.
