Henry Fambrough, Last Surviving Original Member of R&B Group The Spinners, Passes Away at 85

Henry Fambrough, the last surviving original member of the iconic R&B group The Spinners, has sadly passed away at the age of 85, according to a spokesperson for the group.

Fambrough died peacefully of natural causes in his northern Virginia home, spokesperson Tanisha Jackson confirmed in a statement.

The Legacy of The Spinners

The Spinners, known for their timeless hits such as “It’s a Shame,” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love,” and “The Rubberband Man,” were inducted into the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in November. Alongside Fambrough, the other original members Billy Henderson, Pervis Jackson, Bobby Smith, Philippé Wynne, and John Edwards were also recognized for their contributions.

Last May, Fambrough had the opportunity to visit Motown’s Studio A in Detroit as part of a special ceremony. During the event, the group donated 375 outfits worn during their performances to the Motown Museum, commemorating their incredible journey.

“It was a long time ago,” Fambrough reminisced about the 1960s when he first stepped foot into the studio. “I used to dream about this place.”

A Musical Journey

During his career, Fambrough played an integral role in shaping the sound of The Spinners. He fondly recalled the early days when he had to convince his wife that the studio was where he spent countless hours rehearsing and recording with his bandmates, often in the early hours of the morning.

The group’s breakthrough came with their Motown hit “It’s A Shame,” which reached No. 14 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 1970. Following their success at Motown, The Spinners signed with Atlantic Records and went on to produce a string of hits, including the chart-topping “Then Came You,” a collaboration with singer Dionne Warwick.

Their exceptional talent earned The Spinners six Grammy Award nominations and garnered them 18 platinum and gold albums throughout their illustrious career.

A Lasting Legacy

The Spinners, originally known as The Domingoes, formed in 1954 in Ferndale, just north of Detroit. Ten years later, they joined the esteemed Motown Records, marking the beginning of their extraordinary journey.

Henry Fambrough is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Norma, and their daughter Heather Williams. His contributions to The Spinners and the world of R&B music will always be remembered and cherished.

May he rest in peace.
