Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Mustapha Ahmed, Passes Away
In a sad turn of events, Major (Rtd) Dr. Mustapha Ahmed, the former Minister of Youth and Sports, has passed away. The unfortunate incident occurred during the late hours of Wednesday, February 7.
A Distinguished Career and Contributions
Dr. Mustapha Ahmed had a distinguished career and was highly regarded in his field. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ayawaso North Constituency from 2001 to 2016. In March 2015, he was appointed as the Minister of Youth and Sports by former President John Dramani Mahama, succeeding Mahama Ayariga.
During his tenure as Minister, Dr. Ahmed made significant contributions to the development of sports in the country. He played a crucial role in promoting youth participation in sports and worked towards improving facilities and infrastructure for athletes.
However, his time as Minister was cut short when he was replaced by Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye in a government reshuffle less than a year later.
Controversies and Legal Issues
Dr. Mustapha Ahmed faced some legal issues during his career. In March of the following year after being replaced as Minister, he was sentenced to seven days in prison for contempt of court. This was a result of his trespassing on a land that he had been instructed to avoid by the Financial and Economic Crimes Division of an Accra High Court.
Furthermore, Justice Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe fined him GH¢12,000, with the alternative of serving an additional 30 days in jail if the fine was not paid.
Remembering Dr. Mustapha Ahmed
Dr. Mustapha Ahmed will be remembered not only for his contributions to politics and sports but also for his service as a dentist at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra. He dedicated his time and skills to providing dental care to the military personnel and their families.
