TUCSON, Ariz. – The Reid Park Zoo in Tucson is deeply saddened by the unexpected loss of Tikiti Maji, a Grevy’s zebra foal, who tragically died in a freak accident on Tuesday.

The incident occurred when Tikiti’s mother, Anna, was startled by a gust of wind. In her sudden reaction, Anna moved towards a wood-paneled fence in a different area of the habitat. Unfortunately, Tikiti, who was running alongside her mother, didn’t stop in time and suffered a fatal neck injury. Despite immediate response from the veterinary staff, the foal passed away instantly.

Zebras, as a species, are known to be easily startled, and such accidents are not uncommon. In fact, Reid Park Zoo had previously lost a male foal in a similar event back in July 2020.

Prior to Tikiti’s birth on Christmas morning, the zoo had taken significant measures to ensure the safety of the foal. Modifications were made to the zebra habitat to enhance visibility of the barriers for the young zebra. Additionally, access to the larger main zebra habitat was increased for both the mother and foal, while a quiet zone was established around the zebras’ behind-the-scenes areas. In light of this tragic incident, further evaluation of the habitat will be conducted, including consultations with experts.

Adam Ramsey, the director of animal care at Reid Park Zoo, expressed the team’s deep sorrow over the loss of Tikiti. He described her as a playful and energetic foal who quickly captured the hearts of everyone who encountered her. Tikiti’s absence will be deeply felt by all.

The animal care team at the zoo is providing extra support to Anna as she grieves the loss of her offspring. Anna is spending more time interacting with her keepers and will gradually transition to spending her days with her companions, Ben and Zuri.

Nancy Kluge, the president and CEO of Reid Park Zoo, expressed her sympathy for Anna and the dedicated animal care professionals at the zoo. She emphasized their commitment to providing quality care for every animal and the profound sadness they feel over this tragedy.

Grevy’s zebras are an endangered species, with less than 2,000 remaining in the wild. Reid Park Zoo actively participates in the Grevy’s Zebra Species Survival Plan, a partnership organized by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The plan aims to promote genetic diversity in zoo populations and protect against the depletion of the species and its natural habitat.
