Paul Humann, Co-Founder of New World Publications and Renowned Marine Life Photographer, Passes Away at 86
Paul Humann, a well-known figure in the world of marine life photography and co-founder of New World Publications, has sadly passed away at the age of 86. Humann, who was best known for his contributions to the popular Reef fish identification book series, died peacefully at his home in Davie, Florida, surrounded by loved ones.
A Passion for the Underwater World
Humann’s love for the ocean began early on. Born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, he developed a deep interest in marine biology and pursued a degree in biology from Wichita State University. After completing his studies, he went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from Washburn Law School. Despite a successful law career in Wichita, Humann’s true passion lay beneath the waves.
During his time in law school, Humann discovered scuba diving and underwater photography. His captivating fish portraits caught the attention of Skin Diver Magazine, where they were featured in the Fish of the Month Series. This recognition propelled Humann into the world of underwater photography, leading him to become the vice president of photography for the Underwater Society of America.
A Life Dedicated to Exploring and Documenting Marine Life
In 1971, Humann made a life-changing decision to leave his law practice behind and become the captain and owner of the M/V Cayman Diver, the first liveaboard ship in the Caribbean. This marked the beginning of his extensive exploration of the Caribbean’s coral reefs, where he documented the region’s rich marine biodiversity.
Humann’s passion for marine life led him to publish several books on the subject, including the highly acclaimed Reef fish identification series. His collaboration with Ned DeLoach, founder of New World Publications, resulted in a total of 14 ocean-related books that became invaluable resources for underwater naturalists.
His dedication to marine life and the environment extended beyond his photography and publications. In 1990, Humann and DeLoach founded the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF), which aimed to protect biodiversity and inspire the public through citizen science and education. REEF’s extensive fish sighting database, compiled by trained volunteer divers, stands as a testament to Humann’s commitment to conservation.
A Lasting Legacy
Throughout his career, Humann’s work played a significant role in establishing visual identification criteria for numerous marine species. His photographs, often the first-ever published of living species in their natural habitat, have contributed to the understanding and preservation of reef ecosystems. In recognition of his contributions, several species have been named in his honor.
Humann’s impact on the diving community and the marine environment earned him numerous accolades, including the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association’s Reaching Out Award in 2006 and induction into the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame in 2007.
