Srinagar – Veteran broadcaster, poet, and Sahitya Akademi winner Mir Mohammad Farooq Nazki breathed his last at a hospital in Katra on Tuesday. The 83-year-old had held several important positions in All India Radio Kashmir and Doordarshan throughout his illustrious career.

A Life Dedicated to Broadcasting and Poetry

Mir Mohammad Farooq Nazki, a prominent figure in the field of broadcasting, suffered a heart attack on Monday night, according to family sources. Known for his remarkable contributions to the literary world, Nazki’s passing is mourned by many.

Nazki is survived by two daughters and a son. In recent years, his health had been deteriorating, prompting him to move in with his son in Jammu, as reported by family sources.

In 1995, Nazki was honored with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi award in Kashmiri for his poetry book titled “Naar Hyutun Kanzal Wanas” (Fire in the Eyelashes). This recognition cemented his status as a celebrated poet and writer.

A Lasting Legacy and Final Resting Place

Aside from his contributions to broadcasting and poetry, Nazki also served as the media advisor to two former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah. His expertise and guidance were invaluable to these leaders during their tenures.

The veteran journalist will be laid to rest at the Malkha graveyard in Srinagar on Wednesday, according to sources close to the family. The body is currently being transported from Jammu to Srinagar for the final rites.

News of Nazki’s passing has elicited condolences from various quarters. Former minister Haseeb Drabu, who is also the son-in-law of the deceased, expressed his grief and paid tribute to the late broadcaster and poet.

“The passing away of a qalander is not to be mourned; his fulfilling life is to be celebrated. For he has left this station after enriching it in many ways. A societal loss which is a personal bereavement. RIP Mir Mohammed Farooq Nazki (1940 – 2024),” Drabu wrote on X.
