Mir Mohammad Farooq Nazki, a veteran broadcaster, poet, and Sahitya Akademi winner, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 83. He had been residing with his son in Jammu for the past few years due to his declining health. Sadly, he suffered a heart attack on Monday night. His body is being transported from Jammu to Srinagar, where he will be laid to rest at Malkha graveyard on Wednesday.
Farooq Nazki held various significant positions in All India Radio Kashmir and Doordarshan. In recognition of his literary talent, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi grant in Kashmiri in 1995 for his poetry book titled “Naar Hyutun Kanzal Wanas” (Fire in the eyelashes). Additionally, he served as the media advisor to two chief ministers of Jammu & Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah.
The news of Nazki’s passing has left many journalists and leaders mourning his loss. Ghulam Nabi Azad expressed his deep sadness and admiration for Nazki’s literary brilliance and media presence. He acknowledged the lasting impact Nazki made in the fields of broadcasting and literature, and extended his prayers and condolences to the family.
Former minister Haseeb Drabu, who is also the son-in-law of the deceased, celebrated Nazki’s fulfilling life and considered his passing as a societal loss and personal bereavement. He highlighted the enriching contributions Nazki made during his time on this earth and bid him a peaceful rest.
Akashvani Srinagar’s Cluster Head, Ajay Dohare, along with the station’s staff and Deputy Director General (Engineering), expressed their grief over the loss of Farooq Nazki. They emphasized his significant role as the former Station Director of Akashvani and Doordarshan Srinagar, his Sahitya Akademi Award, and his prominence as a poet and broadcaster.
Farooq Nazki’s death is a great loss to the literary and broadcasting community. His talents and contributions will always be remembered and treasured. May his soul rest in peace.
