Jesse Bell: Remembering a Beloved Teacher and Entrepreneur

Jesse Bell

Early Life and Education

Jesse Bell, a dedicated teacher and successful entrepreneur, passed away on December 25 at the age of 90. His daughter, Darletta Anderson, confirmed that the cause of death was complications from lymphoma. Bell had been receiving care at AccentCare Inpatient Hospice Center in Naperville, where he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones. He had been a resident of Aurora since 2008.

Born as Jesse James Bell in St. Francisville, Louisiana, he moved to New Orleans with his family at the age of 4. Bell excelled academically and received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Dillard University in New Orleans in 1955. During his time at Dillard, he also played football, showcasing his athleticism.

A Life of Service

After college, Bell set his sights on California to begin his career. However, fate intervened when he was drafted into the Army and served for two years, including a significant period in Germany. Stationed at the boundary between East Germany and West Germany, he played a crucial role in maintaining peace and security.

Following his military service, Bell relocated to Chicago to be with his wife, who was also a Dillard University alumna and a nurse at the University of Illinois Research and Educational Hospitals. Bell embarked on a teaching career, starting at Irving Elementary School in Maywood in 1961. He taught math and world history to sixth through eighth graders, leaving a lasting impact on his students.

In the mid-1970s, Bell transitioned to Roosevelt Elementary School in Broadview, where he continued to teach math and history. His dedication and passion for education earned him the respect and admiration of his students and colleagues alike.

A Remarkable Legacy

Throughout his teaching career, Bell also pursued entrepreneurial ventures. He ran J&D Cab Co. and later established JJ Limousine Service in 1984, which remained operational until 2018. Bell’s commitment to building lasting relationships with his customers was evident in the way he maintained connections long after they stopped utilizing his services.

Outside of work, Bell had a passion for travel. He owned a motorhome and, every summer, embarked on road trips across the United States with his daughters. These adventures created cherished memories and strengthened the bond within his family.

Bell’s wife of 55 years, Doris, sadly passed away in 2013. He is survived by his daughters, Darletta Anderson and Jennifer, as well as six grandchildren. The impact of his teachings and his entrepreneurial spirit will continue to be felt by all who knew him.

Services to honor Jesse Bell’s life have already taken place, bringing together friends, family, and former colleagues to celebrate his remarkable journey.
