New Orleans, February 6, 2024 – The city of New Orleans mourns the loss of former Orleans Parish Court Judge and New Orleans City Council President, Eddie Sapir, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 87. The cause of his death has not been announced yet.
Eddie Sapir, a beloved figure in the community, was remembered by Congressman Troy Carter, a longtime friend and former colleague, as one of the “greats” of New Orleans. Carter expressed his sadness and shared his memories of Sapir on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. He highlighted Sapir’s deep love for the city and its people, emphasizing that New Orleans has lost one of its finest. Carter extended his condolences to Sapir’s family, particularly his son JP, and offered his thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Sapir’s contributions to the city were significant. He served four terms on the New Orleans City Council, spanning over two periods. His first term began in the late 1960s, following a two-year term in the state House of Representatives. His second term occurred in the late 1980s, during which he was seen as an ally of Mayor Marc Morial. Beyond his time on the City Council, Sapir also served as a municipal court judge for 20 years. Additionally, he gained recognition for his role as the attorney for Major League Baseball manager Billy Martin.
