Eddie Sapir, Charismatic New Orleans Politician, Passes Away at 86
Eddie Sapir, a charismatic and potent force in New Orleans politics, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 86. Sapir had a long and illustrious career in public service, serving four terms on the City Council and a 20-year tenure on the Municipal Court bench.
A Lifelong Democrat with a Passion for Politics
Eddie Sapir, a lifelong Democrat, first entered the world of politics in the mid-1960s when he was elected to a seat in the state House. After two years, he transitioned to the City Council, representing District B in 1967. In 1974, Sapir left the council to become a Municipal Court judge, all while maintaining a successful law practice on the side. Notably, his clients included the fiery baseball skipper Billy Martin.
Born and raised in New Orleans, Sapir was an Uptowner and a graduate of Alcee Fortier High School. He excelled as a star wrestler, finishing as the state runner-up in the 112-pound weight class in 1954. Sapir went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama and a law degree from Loyola University. He also proudly served in the U.S. Army.
A Bridge Builder in a Divided City
Sapir became known for his ability to build diverse coalitions in a city where racial politics often caused deep divisions. He was a staunch supporter of civil rights and formed alliances with numerous prominent Black politicians. His return to the City Council in 1998 was met with widespread support and the slogan “Eddie’s Ready” appeared on bumper stickers and signs throughout the city.
At the time, the council’s two at-large positions were traditionally occupied by one White politician and one Black politician. Sapir’s election alongside Jim Singleton, a Black politician, marked a significant shift in the city’s political landscape.
A Controversial Figure with Strong Opposition
Despite his popularity, Sapir faced criticism from his political opponents, most notably Peggy Wilson. Wilson accused Sapir of engaging in cronyism and patronage due to his partial ownership stake in Harrah’s casino, which he received in 1994 for providing legal representation during the casino’s establishment.
Wilson’s opposition to Sapir’s candidacy led to a bitter feud between the two politicians. Sapir defended himself, stating, “I am a proven, effective leader and coalition builder. She has failed miserably at working with others.” Ultimately, Sapir and Singleton emerged victorious, solidifying Sapir’s position as a major center of power on the City Council.
A Legacy of Service and Leadership
Eddie Sapir’s career in elected service spanned five decades, and his commitment to equality and partnership with Black New Orleans set him apart as a true public servant. His ability to make friends easily and his unwavering conviction to his causes endeared him to many.
Sapir’s influence extended beyond the political arena, with his alliance with Congressman Troy Carter, who served on the City Council during Sapir’s tenure, standing as a testament to his enduring impact.
A Lasting Impact on New Orleans Politics
Although barred by term limits from seeking re-election in 2006, Sapir remained a prominent figure in New Orleans politics. In 2010, he briefly considered running for council or mayor, inspiring the creation of “Run Eddie Run” signs across the city. While he ultimately withdrew from the race, Sapir’s legacy continues to shape the political landscape of New Orleans.
As the city mourns the loss of Eddie Sapir, his contributions to the community and his dedication to public service will be remembered and cherished..
