Remembering a Dedicated Educator

William H. “Bill” Fortune, a highly respected professor at the University of Kentucky’s J. David Rosenberg College of Law, sadly passed away on Monday, Jan. 29, at the age of 83, as reported by the Lexington Herald Leader.

Fortune’s journey at the College of Law began in the late 1960s, and he remained dedicated to his students and the field of law until his retirement in 2012. However, his passion for teaching led him back to the college, where he continued to share his expertise in criminal procedure, evidence, and professional responsibility, according to the Rosenberg College of Law website.

A Legacy of Accomplishments

During his illustrious career, Fortune was recognized with numerous awards and accolades. These include the KBA Thomas Spain Award, honoring his outstanding contributions to continuing legal education, the Chief Justice’s Special Service Award for his invaluable work on the Kentucky Rules of Professional Conduct, the Henry T. Duncan Award, the KBA Young Lawyers Service Award, and the HY Public Defense Minister of Justice Award.

Impact Beyond Measure

Mary Davis, the dean of the Rosenberg College of Law, expressed the difficulty in quantifying Fortune’s impact on the college itself, as it was truly significant. She described him as a dedicated individual who consistently prioritized what mattered most to him, dedicating his entire life to those causes.

Fortune’s impact extended beyond the classroom. Through his collaborations with fellow professors, he made significant contributions to the history and doctrines of law. A Generous Spirit

According to Davis, Fortune consistently gave back to the College of Law community. Whether it was supporting students, advocating for local causes, or assisting his colleagues and the dean, he always showed up with his unwavering support.

Even in his final years, Fortune remained dedicated to his work. He completed a biography of his colleague Robert “Bob” Laussen, and all the proceeds from the book were generously donated to the university’s law student support fund.

Kindness and Compassion

Beyond his professional achievements, Fortune was known for his kindness and generosity. Throughout his career, he took on pro bono cases, showcasing his commitment to using his legal expertise to help those in need.

Davis characterized Fortune as a shining presence within the College of Law community. He possessed a gregarious and friendly nature, always genuinely interested in the well-being of those around him.

She concluded by saying, “His support has been consistent and meaningful to people, which is truly remarkable. He made the place shine.”
