Toby Keith, Country Singer-Songwriter, Dies at 62 After Battling Stomach Cancer

NASHVILLE (WJW) — Country singer-songwriter Toby Keith, known for his string of hits and philanthropic efforts, has passed away at the age of 62. According to his website, Keith lost his battle with stomach cancer on February 5th, surrounded by his loving family.

Keith’s official Facebook page released a statement, saying, “Toby Keith passed peacefully last night, fighting his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.” He is survived by his wife and three children.

Keith bravely revealed his cancer diagnosis in June of 2022, sharing his journey with his fans through social media. He underwent six months of intensive treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

In an interview with FOX News in September of 2023, Keith spoke about how his faith helped him cope with his illness. He said, “I lean on my faith and I just pray and lean into it. It has been my rock during this challenging time.” Despite the ups and downs, Keith remained optimistic, stating, “Today, I feel good.”

Toby Keith’s music touched the hearts of millions around the world. With chart-topping hits like “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue,” and “Red Solo Cup,” he became a beloved figure in the country music industry.

In addition to his musical accomplishments, Keith also made a significant impact offstage. He founded the Toby Keith Foundation in 2006, an organization dedicated to providing no-cost housing for children with cancer. Through his foundation, Keith brought hope and support to countless families in need.

Recognized for his contributions to the music industry, Keith was honored as a member of the prestigious Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. In September 2023, he accepted the inaugural Country Music Icon award at the People’s Choice Country Awards in Nashville.
