Melvin Way, Self-Taught Artist Known for Intricate Drawings, Passes Away at 70
Melvin Way, a self-taught artist who gained recognition for his intricate ballpoint pen drawings, has sadly passed away at the age of 70. He died on February 4 in a South Carolina hospital near his residence, following complications from a stroke, according to his New York dealer, Andrew Edlin.
A Unique Artistic Journey
Born in South Carolina in 1954, Melvin Way was raised by relatives in Brooklyn. He showed an early talent for art and eventually studied at a technical school in Midtown. However, in his 20s, he began experiencing symptoms of mental illness and was later diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Intricate and Layered Drawings
Way’s artistic style was truly unique. Since the mid-1980s, he created highly detailed drawings using a ballpoint pen, often incorporating musical notes and chemical formulas. His works were known for their intricate layers, which included Scotch tape and broken phrases on found pieces of paper.
A Struggle with Homelessness and Recognition
As Way’s health deteriorated in the late 1980s, he found himself without a home, moving between shelters and rehab centers. During this time, he became affiliated with Hospital Audiences Inc, a nonprofit organization that supported disabled artists in New York. It was through this connection that he met Andrew Castrucci, an artist and professor at the School of Visual Arts.
Castrucci recognized Way’s talent and began showcasing his drawings at Bullet Space, an artist-run venue in the East Village. Way’s work also appeared at the inaugural Outsider Art Fair in 1993. Despite his struggles with homelessness, Way’s drawings gained attention and he became a cult figure in the New York art scene, with exhibitions at White Columns and the American Folk Art Museum.
Recognition and Legacy
In 2015, art critic Jerry Saltz described Way’s drawings as a “retinally dense intertwisted world,” suggesting that he deserved recognition alongside other prominent contemporary artists. The following year, Way received the prestigious $60,000 Wyn Newhouse Award, which supports disabled artists.
Andrew Edlin, Way’s dealer, has not disclosed whether there are surviving relatives involved in posthumous sales of his artwork. However, he believes that Way’s drawings will continue to captivate and challenge viewers with their enigmatic meaning.
