Bob Beckwith, Heroic Firefighter Who Stood with President Bush After 9/11, Passes Away at 91

London, UK – It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of Bob Beckwith, a former New York City firefighter who played a pivotal role in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack. Beckwith, who stood alongside President George W. Bush as he delivered his historic bullhorn speech, passed away on Sunday at the age of 91, according to the Uniformed Firefighters Association.

The iconic scene, in which Beckwith stood tall for America, New York City, and all New Yorkers, symbolized the resilience of the nation as it transitioned from mourning the devastating attacks to retaliating against Al Qaeda in the Afghanistan War. The Uniformed Firefighters Association fondly remembers Beckwith as one of the heroes of 9/11, dedicating countless hours to searching for the members lost on that fateful day.

President Bush met with emergency responders at the site of the World Trade Centers just three days after the attack. As he addressed the crowd, the workers at Ground Zero shouted that they couldn’t hear him. In response, Bush, with unwavering determination, declared, “I can hear you, the rest of the world hears you, and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon.”

Bob Beckwith, retired from a remarkable 30-year career with the New York Fire Department, joined the search and rescue efforts in the days following the attack. In a moment of great significance, Beckwith presented President Bush with the bullhorn he had used during his speech. This cherished artifact is now on display at the George W. Bush Library.

Reflecting on their first meeting, President Bush expressed his fond memories of Beckwith. He recounted, “I met Bob on the heap of a burnt-out fire engine in New York. Neither of us knew that we were going to meet on that day… I was given a bullhorn, and it turned out to be one of those moments where I had a chance to speak to the world on behalf of the citizens of New York. And Bob was standing there by my side.”

Upon hearing the news of Beckwith’s passing, President Bush, alongside his wife Laura, shared their heartfelt condolences. President Bush described Beckwith as a patriot and a symbol of the resilient spirit of New Yorkers and Americans after 9/11. He commended Beckwith’s courage, as he, like many other brave first responders, selflessly raced towards danger to save and search for others. The President expressed his pride in having Beckwith by his side at Ground Zero and the privilege of staying in touch with this remarkable individual over the years.

Bob Beckwith’s legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those who witnessed his bravery and determination in the face of unimaginable tragedy. His selflessness and unwavering commitment to serving others serve as an inspiration to all. As we bid farewell to this true hero, let us remember the countless lives he touched and the indelible mark he left on our nation’s history.

Rest in peace, Bob Beckwith. Your courage and dedication will never be forgotten.
