Vic Power, the longest serving mayor in Timmins, Ont., passed away on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the age of 89. His death has left the community mourning the loss of a true legend.

Power’s political journey began in 1966 when he was first elected as a councillor. He went on to serve several terms as mayor, leaving an indelible mark on the city from 1980 to 1988, 1991 to 2000, and 2003 to 2006.

The current Timmins Mayor, Michelle Boileau, expressed her admiration for Power, stating, “Mr. Power is a legend.” She described him as a dedicated man who loved the city and its people, working tirelessly to make Timmins the best it could be.

Despite his advanced age, Power attended Mayor Boileau’s inaugural meeting, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the community. Boileau fondly recalled the poignant moment, acknowledging Power’s determination despite his declining health.

Former city councillor Ray Auclair, who had the privilege of being mentored by Power, spoke highly of their relationship. Power’s knowledge and effective communication skills played a crucial role in driving progress and development in Timmins. Auclair also highlighted Power’s exceptional salesmanship, as he passionately promoted the city in various capacities.

In the later years, Auclair would deliver a daily copy of the Globe and Mail to Power, ensuring he remained connected to current events. The last week was particularly challenging for both of them, as Power’s health deteriorated and he missed his daily newspaper.

Auclair reflected on Power’s kindness and remarkable ability to remember everyone’s name, leaving an everlasting impression on those who knew him.
