Former New York Jets tight end and wide receiver Richard Caster, who enjoyed a successful 13-year NFL career, has sadly passed away at the age of 75. Caster, who was selected for three Pro Bowls during his time in the league, died peacefully in his sleep at his home on Long Island on Friday. The news was confirmed by family representative Kenny Zore, who stated that Caster had been battling a long illness.
A Stellar Career and Contributions to the Game
Richard Caster, a second-round pick of the Jets in 1970 from Jackson State, left an indelible mark on the sport. Standing at an impressive 6 feet 5 inches and weighing 228 pounds, Caster was initially drafted as a wide receiver due to his remarkable speed, running an impressive 4.5 40-yard dash. However, his combination of size and speed led him to be switched to the tight end position by coach Weeb Ewbank.
Caster’s versatility and athleticism made him a favorite target of Jets’ legendary quarterback Joe Namath. He recorded an impressive 322 receptions for 5,515 yards and 45 touchdowns during his NFL career. His performance on the field earned him three Pro Bowl selections in 1972, 1974, and 1975.
Memorable Moments and Legacy
One of Caster’s most memorable games was in Week 2 of the 1972 season when he caught three of Namath’s six touchdown passes. In that game, Caster finished with six receptions for an outstanding 204 yards, contributing to the Jets’ victory over the Baltimore Colts. During that same season, Caster achieved career highs with 833 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns.
After spending his first eight seasons with the Jets, Caster played three years with the Houston team before joining the New Orleans and Washington organizations in 1981. He had the honor of being part of the Washington team that won the Super Bowl to cap off the 1982 season.
Caster’s contributions to the Jets’ franchise did not go unnoticed. His 4,434 receiving yards with New York place him 10th on the team’s career list. Reflecting on his career, Caster expressed pride in his ability to play for 13 years, a remarkable feat considering the average career length during that time was significantly shorter.

Richard Caster is survived by his loving wife Susan, sons Richard J. Caster, Max Caster, and Sean Caster, as well as daughters Shannon Myla and Alona Nicole. He also leaves behind five grandchildren. Max, one of Caster’s sons, has followed in his father’s footsteps and is currently a professional wrestler signed to All Elite Wrestling.
