Former New York Jets Player Richard Caster Passes Away at Age 75
Former New York Jets tight end and wide receiver Richard Caster, who enjoyed a successful 13-year career in the NFL, has sadly passed away at the age of 75. Caster, who was selected for three Pro Bowls during his time with the Jets, died peacefully in his sleep at his home on Long Island, New York, on Friday morning. His death follows a long illness, according to family representative Kenny Zore.
A Successful Career on the Field
Caster began his football journey as a second-round pick for the New York Jets in the 1970 NFL Draft. He played college football at Jackson State before joining the professional ranks. Standing at an impressive 6-foot-5 and weighing 228 pounds, Caster initially started as a wide receiver, known for his exceptional speed, running a 4.5 40-yard dash.
However, his remarkable combination of size and speed led coach Weeb Ewbank to switch him to the tight end position. This decision proved to be a game-changer for Caster, as he consistently outperformed opposing linebackers with his speed and agility.
A Favorite Target of Joe Namath
During his eight seasons with the Jets, Caster developed a strong connection with legendary quarterback Joe Namath. Together, they formed a formidable partnership on the field, with Caster becoming one of Namath’s favorite targets. His exceptional performance earned him three Pro Bowl selections in the 1972, 1974, and 1975 seasons.
Caster’s contributions to the Jets’ offense were significant, as he ranks 10th on the franchise’s career list for receiving yards, with an impressive 4,434 yards. One of his standout performances came in Week 2 of the 1972 season when he caught three of Namath’s six touchdown passes and finished with six receptions for 204 yards in a memorable victory over the Baltimore Colts.
A Career Filled With Achievements
After his successful tenure with the Jets, Caster went on to play for the Houston Oilers for three years. He later spent the 1981 season with the New Orleans Saints and the Washington team, where he played in one game and contributed to their Super Bowl-winning season in 1982.
Reflecting on his career, Caster expressed his pride in being able to play for 13 years, a feat that was uncommon during that era. He believed that his ability to bring value to teams even in the later stages of his career was a testament to his talent and dedication.
A Loving Family Left Behind
Caster is survived by his wife Susan, their children Richard J. Caster, Max Caster, Sean Caster, Shannon Myla, and Alona Nicole, as well as five grandchildren. Max Caster, one of his sons, is currently a professional wrestler signed to All Elite Wrestling.
The legacy of Richard Caster extends beyond his achievements on the football field. He will be remembered for his talent, dedication, and the impact he made on the teams he played for. His contributions to the sport will not be forgotten, and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and fans.
