Background and Career

Joseph Termini, a prominent figure in the New York legal community and former leader of the state bureau overseeing failing insurance companies, passed away at the age of 87. Termini, a resident of Locust Valley, had a remarkable 40-year legal career before retiring in 2002.

Termini joined the New York Liquidation Bureau as an attorney in 1972 and later became the special deputy superintendent in 1994. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in negotiating multimillion-dollar deals to safeguard insurers’ assets for policyholders and creditors. In 1989, he achieved a groundbreaking $48 million settlement, holding the parent company of a failing insurer accountable, marking a significant milestone in the industry.

Termini’s expertise and dedication were widely recognized, leading his co-workers to honor him by naming a conference room after him when he retired. Jim O’Connor, Termini’s successor, praised his management skills and humble approach, highlighting his respected position within the legal community.

Passing and Legacy

On January 15, Joseph Termini passed away after battling various health issues over the course of a year. His family shared that even during his health struggles, he retained his easy-going spirit and love for storytelling, which he had developed during his youth in Brooklyn.

Joseph Termini’s principles and strong character were evident from an early age. A childhood friend, Joe Genovese, recalled how Termini stood up for him when baseball coaches intended to cut him from the team. Termini’s commitment to doing what he believed was right, even when unpopular, shaped his life and career.

A Life-Changing Conversation

One conversation at the Termini household had a profound impact on Joseph’s future. A painter mentioned that his son was attending The Citadel military college in South Carolina, sparking Joseph’s interest. Although he initially felt uncertain about his decision, Joseph enrolled at The Citadel and persevered through the challenges he faced during his first year.

Joseph’s wife, Mary Jo Termini, emphasized that he took immense pride in his time at The Citadel, as it instilled in him a sense of order, honor, and integrity. These values continued to guide him throughout his legal career.

A Distinguished Career and Personal Life

After graduating from The Citadel in 1958, Termini served as a second lieutenant in the Army, delivering classified information in the Pentagon. He later pursued a law degree at St. John’s University, balancing his Army Reserve duties and work as an insurance underwriter.

Termini’s interest in public service led him to run as a Republican candidate for the state Assembly and Senate, although he did not win. Despite the losses, he enjoyed engaging with people and exchanging views, showcasing his genuine interest in connecting with others.

In his later years, Joseph Termini cherished spending time with his wife and their dogs, Dakota and Sachi, reflecting on the most important aspects of his life: family and his reputation as an honest attorney.
