Jackson Heights resident Hannah Deutch, a remarkable woman who survived the Holocaust by escaping Germany, has sadly passed away at the age of 101. Her death occurred on January 29, leaving behind a legacy of strength and resilience.

Deutch was born and raised in Bochum, Germany, where she experienced the horrors of Kristallnacht, also known as the Night of Broken Glass, in 1938. At just 16 years old, she managed to escape Germany and find safety in England through the Kindertransport Program. This organized effort saved countless children from the clutches of the Nazis, and Deutch was fortunate to have the support of her cousin.

During World War II, Deutch enlisted in the British Army and served as a nurse from 1941 to 1944. She actively participated in the Jewish Forces Club, a group that allowed Jewish members of the Allied Forces to come together and support one another during these challenging times.

After the war, Deutch moved to Chile in 1949 to be with her mother and stepfather following the death of her husband, who had sustained injuries in World War II and tragically passed away. In 1962, she made the decision to relocate to Elmhurst, Queens, with her two sons. Eventually, she settled in Jackson Heights in 1979, where she spent the rest of her life.

Throughout her life, Hannah Deutch remained an active member of the Jackson Heights community. She touched the lives of many, including Jackson Heights Council Member Shekar Krishnan. In an Instagram post, Krishnan described her as a source of inspiration and strength, always reminding him to prioritize his children. Deutch’s unwavering faith in a better world was evident in her interactions with others and her dedication to future generations.

Deutch is survived by her two sons, one residing in Canada and the other in New Hampshire. Her passing leaves a void in their lives, but they can take solace in the incredible legacy she has left behind.

As news of Hannah Deutch’s passing spreads, the community mourns the loss of a truly remarkable individual. Her life serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the power of resilience.
