Beloved Tortoise at Idaho Falls Zoo Passes Away at the Age of 150

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (ABC4) — It is with great sadness that we report the passing of a beloved member of the Idaho Falls Zoo family. Butros, an Aldabra tortoise who had been a cherished resident for many years, peacefully left us earlier this month. This remarkable tortoise, believed to be around 150 years old, captured the hearts of visitors and staff alike.

Butros was a member of the Aldabra tortoise species, known as one of the largest land tortoises in the world. We remember him as a gentle giant, adored by all who encountered him. According to our release, his days were filled with simple joys – basking in the sun, soaking in a pool, and relishing in his favorite snacks of willow, hay, lettuce, and the occasional carrot.

Aldabra tortoises, like Butros, can grow to an impressive size of up to 550 pounds and live up to 150 years. These incredible creatures are a true marvel of nature, and Butros was no exception.

Many visitors may recall seeing Butros and his friend Omar during Behind the Scenes Tours or Keeper Chats, where they captivated audiences with their majestic presence. Butros spent his final months under the attentive care of our dedicated Animal Care staff and Veterinary Team, ensuring that he was comfortable and content until the end.

We would like to assure everyone that Omar, Butros’s loyal companion, is doing well and continues to thrive in our care. Although we mourn the loss of Butros, we are grateful for the memories he has left behind and the joy he brought to so many.

An Extraordinary Journey and Habitat

The Aldabra tortoise, native to Aldabra Island in the Seychelles, has a natural habitat that lies amidst the Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar. These tortoises have adapted to the unique environment of the island, where they roam freely and enjoy a serene existence.

Butros’s passing reminds us to appreciate the simple pleasures in life and the beauty of nature. His slow and steady journey through life serves as a gentle reminder to us all.

While the exact cause of Butros’s passing remains unknown, we can find solace in knowing that he lived a long and fulfilling life. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations to cherish and protect these magnificent creatures.

The Idaho Falls Zoo family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all those who shared in the love and admiration for Butros. Your support and dedication to our mission of conservation and education are truly appreciated.

As we mourn the loss of Butros, let us remember the impact he had on our lives and the joy he brought to so many. He will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Rest in peace, dear Butros.
