Bill Northey, a well-respected figure in the world of agriculture, has passed away at the age of 64. The former Iowa secretary of agriculture, USDA undersecretary, and vice president of the Iowa Master Farmer Association leaves behind a legacy of dedication and service to the farming community.

Northey, a farmer from Spirit Lake, Iowa, was a strong advocate for conservation throughout his career. His passion for preserving the land led him to serve as commissioner of the Dickinson County Soil and Water Conservation District. He also held positions of leadership in various organizations, including president and chairman of the National Corn Growers Association and president of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture.

In 2006-2018, Northey served as the Iowa secretary of agriculture, where he made significant contributions to the state’s farming industry. During his tenure, he was also president of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture from 2011-2012.

In February 2018, Northey was confirmed as a USDA undersecretary, overseeing the Farm Production and Conservation Mission Area. This important role involved providing guidance and support to agencies such as the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Risk Management Agency, and the Farm Service Agency. At the time of his passing, Northey was serving as the vice president of the Iowa Master Farmer Association, a position he had held since 2016.

Northey’s commitment to education and personal growth was evident in his academic achievements. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture business from Iowa State University and went on to complete an MBA from Southwest Minnesota State University.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds expressed her condolences upon hearing the news of Northey’s death. She praised his work ethic and dedication to Iowa agriculture, stating, “Iowans and farmers around the country were fortunate to have such a rock-solid advocate and friend.” She also highlighted his commitment to environmental stewardship and emphasized his role as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

In honor of Northey’s contributions, Governor Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of his funeral and internment. This gesture serves as a sign of respect and recognition for Northey’s lifetime of service to the state. The lowering of flags will be observed at the state Capitol, as well as on flag displays throughout the Capitol Complex and other public buildings, grounds, and facilities across Iowa.

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to join in this tribute by flying their flags at half-staff for the same duration as a mark of respect.

Bill Northey’s passing leaves a void in the agricultural community. His dedication to conservation and his advocacy for farmers will be remembered and cherished by those whose lives he touched.
