During his time at the University of Florida, Carr excelled as a three-year starting center for the Gators. Notably, he was roommates with legendary football figure Steve Spurrier during his senior year. Their friendship would go on to shape the history of Gators’ football for years to come.

Football Career and Military Service

Carr’s talent on the field did not go unnoticed, as he was selected as a fourth-round draft pick by the New Orleans Saints in 1967. However, Carr’s dedication to serving his country led him to leave the team and join the Army in Korea. His selfless decision to prioritize his military service showcased his character and commitment to a cause greater than himself.

Professional and Leadership Roles

Upon his return to the University of Florida in 1970, Carr continued to contribute to the Gators’ football program as a graduate assistant while pursuing his master’s degree in education. His passion for athletics and leadership qualities quickly caught the attention of the university’s athletic director, Ray Graves.

In 1974, Carr started his professional career in sports administration as the assistant to Ray Graves. When Graves retired, Carr was promoted to the position of athletic director, making him the youngest AD in Division 1 history. His tenure as athletic director spanned seven years, from 1979 to 1986, during which he played a crucial role in shaping the Gators’ athletic program.

Life Beyond the Gators

After his time as athletic director, Carr took on new challenges and opportunities. He served as the executive director of a youth advocacy group, positively impacting the lives of young individuals. Carr’s dedication to making a difference extended beyond the world of sports.
