Tributes Pour In for Legendary Musician Tony Cedras
Legendary Elsies River musician, Tony Cedras, passed away on Monday after a battle with chronic emphysema. The news of his death has left the music industry in mourning, with tributes pouring in for the much-loved musician and activist for Khoi culture and music.
Born Anthony Andrew Cedras, the 71-year-old musician was widely known for his talent and passion for music. He grew up in a strict Christian household, where he played the accordion during open-air church services. While his friends played in the street, Tony honed his musical skills at a young age.
Tania Kleinhans-Cedras, Tony’s wife, revealed that he passed away peacefully at their daughter’s home in Kuils River. She described his death as a big loss to the music industry, emphasizing that music was Tony’s life. Despite being a qualified welder, he dedicated himself to being a full-time musician.
Tania shared, “He was multi-disciplinary when it came to his instruments. He played the trumpet, piano, horns, and the bow beautifully. We sometimes played together, and he would ask me to join him on stage, but I never played in public. He played the guitar and also sang. He was truly gifted.”
With a deep appreciation for Khoisan culture, Tony loved researching and sharing his knowledge with others. He enjoyed engaging with international students, teaching them about playing the Khoi bow. His talent also took him to international stages, where he performed alongside renowned artists like Paul Simon. Locally, he collaborated with the likes of Mariam Makeba, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, Amandla Arts Ensemble, and Cliffy Moses.
Tania revealed that at the time of his passing, Tony was working on a follow-up to one of his albums. Unfortunately, he never got to release it.
As news of Tony’s death spread, tributes from friends and colleagues flooded in. Martin Myers, a close friend, expressed his privilege of working with Tony on several occasions.
The music industry has lost a true icon and a talented musician. Tony Cedras will always be remembered for his contribution to Khoi culture and his passion for music. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians.
