Man Dies After Being Tased During Eviction Attempt
In a tragic incident in Willmar, a 75-year-old man named Michael James Yanacheak has died after being tased during an eviction attempt. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is currently investigating the incident.
The Eviction Attempt
On the morning of January 29th, two Kandiyohi County sheriff’s deputies and two Willmar police officers arrived at Yanacheak’s apartment to carry out a court-ordered eviction. They attempted to communicate with Yanacheak, but he did not respond. After an hour of unsuccessful attempts, the apartment manager had to pry open the door.
Once inside, the officers discovered Yanacheak in a bedroom, holding a kitchen knife and approaching them. The police tried to retreat, but in the midst of the chaos, a Taser was deployed, striking Yanacheak.
Medical Care and Investigation
The officers immediately provided medical care to Yanacheak until he could be transported to the hospital. However, despite their efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries and passed away. It is important to note that no firearms were discharged during the incident.
A knife was recovered at the scene by a Willmar police officer and was subsequently handed over to the BCA crime scene personnel for further examination. All three officers involved in the incident were wearing body cameras, and the BCA is currently reviewing the footage as part of their investigation.
Conclusion of Investigation
Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings to the Kandiyohi County Attorney’s Office for review. At this time, it is too early to determine the cause of Yanacheak’s death.
