A beloved figure in Millersville, Lancaster County, John Herr Jr., owner of John Herr’s Village Market, has sadly passed away at the age of 98. John, who worked at the store since his teenage years, officially took over the family business in 1964. His dedication and commitment to the grocery business spanned close to sixty years before his retirement in 2001 at the age of 76. John’s passing on January 20, just a few months before his 99th birthday, has left the community mourning the loss of a remarkable individual.

A Life of Service and Dedication

John Herr Jr.’s story is not just one of a successful business owner, but also of a brave serviceman. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Army Air Force and joined the 416th Squadron as a left-wing gunner on a B-17 bomber. Stationed in Italy, John flew numerous combat missions during World War II. His remarkable service earned him the European-African-Middle Eastern medal with three bronze stars, a testament to his bravery and dedication to his country.

Farewell and Funeral Services

Friends and family are invited to join in honoring John Herr Jr.’s life at the funeral services, which will be held on Thursday, February 8, at 10 a.m. The service will take place at Millersville Community UMC Grace Campus, with Pastor Kerry Leeper officiating. Prior to the funeral, there will be a viewing on Wednesday, February 7, from 5-7 p.m. at the Charles F. Snyder III Funeral Home & Crematory in Willow Street. This will provide an opportunity for loved ones to pay their respects and offer their condolences to the family during this difficult time.
