Chita Rivera, Broadway Star, Passes Away at 91
Chita Rivera, the iconic Broadway star, has sadly passed away at the age of 91, according to her daughter. Her death marks the end of an era in American theater.
A Legendary Career
Rivera left an indelible mark on the theater world with her unforgettable performances and portrayal of iconic characters. She originated the roles of Anita in West Side Story and Velma Kelly in Chicago, solidifying her status as a true Broadway legend.
Throughout her career, Rivera received numerous accolades and recognition for her exceptional talent. She won two Tony awards, one for her role in The Rink and another for Kiss of the Spider Woman, and was nominated for eight more. In 2002, she became the first Hispanic American to receive a Kennedy Center Honor, and in 2009, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
A Masterful Dancer
While Rivera’s singing and acting abilities were unparalleled, it was her dancing that truly set her apart. She collaborated with legendary choreographer Bob Fosse on multiple occasions, most notably on the production of Chicago. Rivera, alongside Gwen Verdon, brought Fosse’s choreography to life, captivating audiences with their incredible skill and precision. One of her most memorable performances was the Hot Honey Rag, which she made look effortless.
Aside from her remarkable career, Rivera leaves behind a lasting legacy. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Mordente, as well as her two brothers, Julio and Armando, and her sister, Lola de Rivero.
