Sandra Milo, Icon of Italian Cinema, Passes Away at 90

Sandra Milo, an iconic figure in Italian cinema and known for her role in Federico Fellini’s masterpiece “8 1/2,” has sadly passed away at the age of 90, according to her family. The news of her death has left the film industry and her fans mourning the loss of a talented actress.

Milo, with her distinctive high-pitched voice, peacefully passed away in her sleep at her home in Rome. She was surrounded by her loving family and her beloved dogs, Jim and Lady, who were by her side until the end. The family’s statement, carried by state-run RAI television, confirmed the sad news.

A Talented Actress Who Made Her Mark in Italian Cinema

Born Elena Salvatrice Greco, Sandra Milo made her breakthrough in Roberto Rossellini’s 1959 film “Il generale Della Rovere (General Della Rovere).” This paved the way for her to work alongside some of the greatest actors of Italy’s post-war film industry, including Alberto Sordi and Marcello Mastroianni, with whom she starred in the Oscar-winning “8 1/2.”

In “8 1/2,” Milo portrayed Carla, the mistress of Mastroianni’s character, film director Guido. Her performance in the film showcased her immense talent and established her as a prominent figure in Italian cinema.

Her collaboration with Fellini continued in the 1965 film “Juliet of the Spirits,” where she appeared alongside Fellini’s own wife. It was in this film that Milo’s on-screen presence shone brightly, captivating audiences with her undeniable talent.

Her personal life also made headlines when she revealed her 17-year secret love affair with Federico Fellini in her indirectly autobiographical book, “Caro Federico.” This revelation gave fans a deeper insight into her life and her connection with the renowned director.

Outside of her film career, Milo became a well-known face on Italian television as a talk show host. However, her fame was marred by a tasteless and infamous on-air prank in 1990. During her talk show on RAI, a prankster called in and falsely informed her that her son, Ciro, had been involved in a serious car accident. In a state of panic, Milo fled the studio, crying out her son’s name. Only later did she discover that it was all a cruel trick.

Sandra Milo is survived by her three children, including Ciro, according to the statement released by RAI.

The passing of Sandra Milo marks the end of an era in Italian cinema. Her incredible talent and contributions to the film industry will forever be remembered. She leaves behind a legacy of remarkable performances that have touched the hearts of audiences around the world.
