A 63-year-old man from San Diego tragically passed away at Zion National Park in Utah. The National Park Service reported that the man was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead on Friday.

According to the park’s news release, the incident occurred on the West Rim Trail near Scout Outlook. The park received a report of an unresponsive hiker in the afternoon, prompting park rangers to respond immediately. They hiked to the location with medical equipment, including an automated external defibrillator (AED) and a heart monitor.

Upon reaching the patient, park rangers discovered that visitors with emergency medical training were already performing CPR and directing others who were assisting. The rangers joined in, administering CPR and using the AED for nearly an hour and a half. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the patient could not be revived and was pronounced dead after consultation with a doctor.

The park stated that the cause of death appears to be consistent with a cardiac event, although further investigation is still being conducted by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Office of the Medical Examiner, and the National Park Service.

Zion National Park superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh expressed his condolences to the hiker’s family and expressed gratitude to the bystanders who assisted in performing CPR. He also announced that the West Rim Trail, which had been temporarily closed for rescue operations, is now open to visitors again.

The park’s response to the incident involved more than 20 search and rescue team members, including emergency medical technicians and paramedics, as well as the park ambulance. Their swift action and dedication exemplify their commitment to visitor safety.
