Jimy Williams, Former Major-League Coach and Manager, Passes Away at 80
Jimy Williams, a well-respected figure in the world of baseball, has sadly passed away at the age of 80. The former major-league coach and manager died on Friday in Florida after a brief illness.
A Storied Career in Baseball
Williams dedicated over three decades of his life to the sport of baseball, leaving an indelible mark on the teams he managed and the players he coached. He served as a major-league manager for the Blue Jays (1986-89), Red Sox (1997-2001), and Astros (2002-04). It was during his tenure with the Red Sox that Williams won the prestigious American League Manager of the Year award in 1999.
Before his successful managerial career, Williams had a brief stint as an infielder, playing for the Cardinals (1966-67) in the major leagues. He also spent several years in the minors, showcasing his talent for teams such as the Red Sox (1965), Cardinals (1966-67), Reds (1968), Expos (1969-71), and Mets (1971).
Williams’ passion for the game extended beyond his playing days. He managed various minor-league teams from 1974-79 and later became a coach for the Blue Jays. This experience paved the way for his successful managerial roles with the Red Sox and Astros.
A Legacy of Success
Williams’ managerial career was nothing short of impressive. After being fired by the Blue Jays, he joined the Atlanta Braves as a coach from 1991-96, contributing to their World Series victory in 1995. In 1997, Williams took on the role of manager for the Red Sox, leading the team to a remarkable 414-352 (.540) record over five seasons. This achievement places him eighth on the franchise’s all-time managerial games and wins lists.
Under Williams’ leadership, the Red Sox experienced back-to-back postseason appearances in 1998 and 1999. In the latter year, the team won 95 games and emerged victorious in the American League Division Series against Cleveland. Williams’ exceptional performance earned him the well-deserved title of AL Manager of the Year.
Following his time with the Red Sox, Williams managed the Astros for three seasons before serving as the Phillies’ bench coach from 2007-08, contributing to the team’s 2008 World Series championship.
A Beloved Family Man
Jimy Williams is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Peggy, and his children Shawn, Brady, Monica Farr, and Jenna Williams. His eight grandchildren will forever cherish the memories they shared with their grandfather.
Both of Williams’ sons have followed in their father’s footsteps, forging their own successful careers in coaching. Brady, a longtime manager in the Rays’ minor-league system, is currently the team’s major-league third base coach. Meanwhile, Shawn has dedicated his talents to managing within the Phillies’ system.
The baseball community mourns the loss of Jimy Williams, a true legend of the game. His contributions to the sport will never be forgotten, and his impact on the lives of those he touched will be everlasting.
