Former Boston Red Sox Manager Jimy Williams Dies at 80

Former Boston Red Sox manager Jimy Williams has passed away at the age of 80. The sad news was confirmed by his former team, who stated that Williams died in Florida after a brief illness.

A Legacy of Success with the Red Sox

Jimy Williams managed the Red Sox from 1997 to 2001, during which he achieved remarkable success. Under his leadership, the team made back-to-back playoff appearances, including a memorable trip to the 1999 American League Championship Series. Although they fell short to the New York Yankees in five games, Williams’ efforts were recognized as he was voted the AL Manager of the Year that season.

Despite the Red Sox winning four World Series titles since his departure, Jimy Williams remains the last manager of the team to have received this prestigious award.

Expressing their condolences, the Red Sox tweeted, “As the Red Sox manager from 1997-2001, Jimy Williams was a true staple and leader of the Red Sox. We send our love to the Williams family.”

A Career Filled with Accomplishments

Williams had an extensive managerial career, having also led the Toronto Blue Jays from 1986 to 1989 and the Houston Astros from 2002 to 2004. Throughout his 12 seasons as a manager, he compiled an impressive record of 910 wins and 790 losses.

Furthermore, Jimy Williams experienced the joy of winning two World Series rings. He earned the first as a third base coach with the 1995 Atlanta Braves and the second as a bench coach with the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies.

A Passion for Baseball

Before his successful managerial career, Jimy Williams had a brief stint as a player, appearing in 14 games for the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1966 and 1967 seasons. However, it was in coaching and managing that he truly found his calling and made a lasting impact on the sport.

Jimy Williams is survived by his wife Peggy, four children, and eight grandchildren. His love for baseball was passed down to his children, as his son Brady currently serves as the third-base coach for the Tampa Bay Rays, while his other son Shawn manages in the Phillies minor league system.

A Fond Farewell

Jimy Williams’ contribution to the world of baseball will not be forgotten. His leadership, dedication, and passion for the game left an indelible mark on the teams he managed and the players he mentored.

While we mourn the loss of this legendary figure, let us remember the legacy he leaves behind and the impact he had on the sport that he loved so dearly.
