Remembering Evelyn Malcoun Alwan: A Life of Love and Resilience

A Journey to a New Home

In 1947, Evelyn Malcoun Alwan left her home in Lebanon and embarked on a new adventure in Peoria, Illinois. This move marked a significant change for Evelyn, as she left behind a large Lebanese community and embraced a new culture. Despite the challenges, Evelyn was determined to make a better life for herself.

At the age of 25, Evelyn met Oscar Alwan, a Peoria resident who had traveled to Lebanon in search of a wife. They quickly fell in love and were married within weeks. However, their backgrounds were vastly different. Evelyn came from a family of means, while Oscar’s family belonged to the working class.

The transition to her new life in America was not easy for Evelyn. She had to adapt to a completely different lifestyle, learning how to cook and take care of a household. Despite the challenges, Evelyn embraced her new role with grace and became known for her excellent cooking skills, providing three sit-down meals for her five children every day. She also contributed to the family business and maintained a beautiful home.

A Life of Elegance and Pride

Evelyn Alwan was a woman of elegance. Even at the age of 101, she applied make-up daily, not out of vanity, but as a symbol of pride and self-confidence. Her granddaughter, Renee Purcell, described her as a role model for the family.

On January 11, 2024, Evelyn Alwan passed away at the age of 101. While her health had declined in the weeks leading up to her death, no specific cause was identified. Her daughter, Sharon Harrison, believes that her mother simply wore out after a long and fulfilling life.

Building a Legacy

When Evelyn arrived in the U.S., she joined her husband in running the Alwan family grocery store in Peoria. The store, which started as a small vegetable stand, grew into a thriving business under Oscar’s leadership. The Alwan family also expanded their living situation, building two houses in a new subdivision.

Evelyn and Oscar Alwan’s entrepreneurial spirit led them to open Famous Recipe Fried Chicken restaurants in 1969, which became beloved establishments in Peoria. They closed the restaurants in 1980, leaving behind a legacy of generosity and community service.

A Lasting Impact

Evelyn Alwan’s love and commitment to her family were unwavering. She played a vital role in bringing the extended family together, hosting gatherings and celebrations. Her granddaughter, Renee Purcell, fondly remembers the Sunday family gatherings that were a cherished tradition.

As Evelyn’s health declined, she remained determined to maintain her independence. She diligently participated in physical therapy to stay mobile and continued to live in her own home, surrounded by loved ones.

Her family remembers her as a strong and influential presence, and her passing leaves a void that cannot be filled. Evelyn Alwan’s life was a testament to love, resilience, and the power of family bonds.
