The Coastal Bend community is mourning the loss of Dr. Floyd Garrett, a beloved veterinarian who passed away on January 14th. Known affectionately as “Doc,” he dedicated over 50 years of his life to serving the people and animals of the Port Aransas area.

A Life Devoted to Animal Care

Dr. Garrett’s passion for animals led him to volunteer at the Animal Friends of Port Aransas nonprofit animal rescue starting in 2009. Prior to his retirement in 2001, he owned and operated the Flower Bluff Animal Hospital and the Island Animal Clinic in Port Aransas. His career as a private veterinarian began in 1977.

Throughout his long and distinguished career, Dr. Garrett touched the lives of many in the Coastal Bend community through his wisdom, kindness, and dedication to helping animals. One person who had the privilege of working closely with him and becoming a lifelong friend is Connie Beane.

“Doc was always there for me and my animals,” Beane fondly recalls. “Whether it was administering vaccines, providing booster shots, or caring for sick animals, he never hesitated to lend a helping hand.”

Beane further reveals the depth of Dr. Garrett’s compassion, sharing, “What many people didn’t know was that if he had to euthanize someone’s pet, he would quietly grieve in private. His empathy for both animals and their owners was truly remarkable.”

Going Above and Beyond

Even after his official retirement in 2001, Dr. Garrett continued to dedicate his time and expertise to help animals in need. Beane recounts, “He may have been retired, but if someone needed help with an animal, he would put on that white coat and be ready to go.”

As news of Dr. Garrett’s passing spread, the Port Aransas community came together to express their condolences and share stories of how he had touched their lives. On social media, countless individuals praised his kindness and the impact he had made on their pets throughout his life.

“Losing Doc is a tremendous loss for all of us,” Beane laments. “He was a friend to everyone he met, and if you had a dog, you were automatically friends. His absence will be deeply felt.”
