Acclaimed Bengali actress Sreela Majumdar, known for her roles in both ‘parallel’ and mainstream cinema, has sadly passed away at the age of 65. She had been battling cancer for the last three years before succumbing to the disease on Saturday afternoon. Majumdar is survived by her husband S.N.M. Abdi, a journalist and columnist, and their son Sohail Abdi. Her husband shared the heartbreaking news, revealing that she had been admitted to the hospital earlier this month but was brought back home where she took her last breath.
Majumdar’s contribution to Bengali cinema is immense, particularly in her collaborations with the late Mrinal Sen. She delivered powerful performances in iconic movies like ‘Akaler Sandhane’, where she portrayed the character of ‘Dugga’, ‘Ekdin Pratidin’ as ‘Minu’, and ‘Kharij’ as ‘Srija’, all of which were directed by Sen. Her acting skills received critical acclaim, and she was highly regarded for her talent. Majumdar made her acting debut at the age of 16 in Sen’s ‘Parashuram’ in 1980.
