22-Year-Old Woman Dies in Tragic Skiing Accident at Aspen Highlands

A tragic incident occurred on Saturday morning at Aspen Highlands ski area, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old woman. According to the Aspen Skiing Company, the young woman collided with a tree while skiing on the Exhibition run, an intermediate trail. The incident took place at 11:26 a.m. and despite the ski patrol’s immediate response and advanced lifesaving measures, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:02 p.m.

As of Saturday evening, the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office had not released the woman’s name and hometown, as they were in the process of locating her next of kin. The news has left the community in shock and our thoughts go out to the woman’s family and friends during this difficult time. The Aspen Skiing Company expressed deep sadness in a news release, acknowledging the tragic accident.

It is important to note that this unfortunate incident comes at a time when Aspen is in the spotlight, hosting the Winter X Games at the nearby Buttermilk ski area. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with winter sports, highlighting the need for caution and safety.

This is the second reported skier death this year at a Colorado ski resort. Just a few days ago, a 69-year-old Vail ski instructor was found unresponsive on the Born Free run and later succumbed to his injuries. Last season, Colorado ski areas witnessed at least 17 deaths, emphasizing the importance of safety precautions and awareness on the slopes.

Tragically, Aspen Highlands has seen its share of skiing accidents in the past. A 70-year-old Basalt man lost his life after colliding with a tree on January 3, 2023, while skiing on the same mountain. It is worth mentioning that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. Additionally, a 54-year-old man from Hungary met a tragic fate just outside the boundaries of Aspen Highlands when he was caught in a large avalanche on March 3, 2023.

Unfortunately, the dangers of winter sports extend beyond ski resorts. On Monday, a 67-year-old snowboarder lost his life in an avalanche near Ophir, marking the first backcountry death of the season in Colorado. These incidents serve as sobering reminders of the inherent risks associated with outdoor activities in the mountains.

While the cause of the 22-year-old woman’s death is still under investigation, it is important for all skiers and snowboarders to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines while enjoying the slopes. Wearing appropriate protective gear, including helmets, can significantly reduce the risk of severe injuries or fatalities.

In conclusion, the Aspen community mourns the loss of a young woman who tragically lost her life in a skiing accident at Aspen Highlands. Our hearts go out to her family and friends as they navigate through this devastating time. Let us remember to prioritize safety and make responsible choices when engaging in winter sports to prevent further tragedies..
