Panama’s national team and former Toluca player, Luis Tejada, tragically passed away on Sunday, January 28, due to cardiac arrest while playing in a recreational league in the Santa Librada neighborhood in Panama City.

Luis Tejada, also known as the ‘Matador,’ holds the record for being the all-time leading scorer in the history of the Panama National Team, alongside Blas Pérez. Together, they formed a formidable attacking duo for almost two decades in various categories, including sub-20, sub-23, and senior levels. With 43 goals to his name, Tejada made 108 appearances for his national team. He even represented Panama in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, as well as the Copa América Centenario in 2016 and four editions of the Gold Cup. In the 2005 edition of the Gold Cup, Tejada emerged as the top scorer and was awarded the Best Player of the Tournament.

Luis Tejada, born on March 28, 1982, in the San Joaquín neighborhood, began his professional soccer career in 2001 with Tauro FC in Panama. He recently played for Potros del Este, marking a remarkable 22-year career that took him to leagues in Panama, Colombia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Peru, and Mexico.

His most memorable moments at the club level came after joining Juan Aurich in Peru, where his goals propelled the team to a championship victory in 2011. Tejada’s exceptional performance in Peru earned him a transfer to Deportivo Toluca, where he played for two tournaments before moving on to the Veracruz Red Sharks.

One of the most iconic goals of Luis Tejada’s career was the bicycle kick he scored against the Mexico national team on March 30, 2005, during a 1-1 draw at the Rommel Fernández Stadium in Panama City. This breathtaking goal will forever be remembered by many fans.
