Dr Nitya Anand, the former director of the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) and the discoverer of India’s first oral contraceptive ‘Saheli’, passed away on Saturday at SGPGIMS Lucknow. He was 99 years old at the time of his death. The last rites for Dr Anand will be held on Monday.
Dr Nitya Anand had a remarkable career in the field of pharmaceutical research. He joined the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) in 1951, when it was first established, and served as its director from 1974 to 1984. During his tenure, he made significant contributions to the field of medicinal chemistry and played a crucial role in the development of new drugs.
One of Dr Anand’s most notable achievements was the discovery of ‘Centchroman’, also known as ‘Saheli’. This groundbreaking oral contraceptive, which is non-steroidal and non-hormonal, revolutionized the field of family planning. It was launched by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1986 and has since been incorporated into the National Family Planning Programme of India.
‘Saheli’ remains the world’s only non-steroidal and non-hormonal contraceptive, even to this day. Throughout his career, Dr Nitya Anand published over 400 research papers and held more than 130 patents.
