Remembering Dave: A Dedicated Keeper of the Cove

January 1, 2024 – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dave, a beloved member of our community. Dave peacefully departed this world in the very house he was born in, surrounded by the memories of a life well-lived.

A Life Rooted in the Cove

As a father-of-three, Dave was a witness to the joys and challenges of parenthood. He watched with pride as his children and five grandchildren grew up in the same cove that had shaped his own upbringing.

A Brave Journey at Sea

At the age of 17, Dave selflessly volunteered to join the Navy. For two and a half years, he served on the HMS Cavalier, a ship built at J. Samuel White’s shipyard on our Island. In the Far Eastern and Atlantic waters, he displayed immense courage, saving lives while coming perilously close to losing his own.

A Life of Service

Upon returning to the Island, Dave dedicated himself to serving the community in various roles. He became a familiar face in Ventnor, where he manned the beach, ensuring the safety and comfort of visitors. From deckchair duties to organizing boat trips, Dave made sure everyone had a memorable time.

His commitment to safeguarding lives extended beyond the beach. For an impressive 33 years, Dave volunteered for the Auxiliary Coastguard, lending a helping hand during emergencies along the coastline. Additionally, he spent seven years as a bus driver, ensuring the smooth transportation of passengers across the Island.

A Family Legacy

In 1971, Dave took over the longshoreman duties from his retired father, William. This passing of the torch marked the continuation of a family tradition, with generations of his family deeply involved in The Crab Shed. Dave’s passion for fishing remained unwavering, and even into his 90s, he could be found casting his nets for crab and lobster.

Fondly Remembered

Dave’s unwavering dedication earned him the endearing title of ‘dedicated keeper of the cove’. His commitment to his community and his love for the sea will be fondly remembered by all those whose lives he touched.

As we bid farewell to Dave, let us cherish the memories he leaves behind and find solace in the knowledge that his spirit will forever be a part of the cove he held dear.
