Van Pearlberg

The Marietta community is mourning the loss of Van Pearlberg, a well-respected attorney and cherished member of the Church Street neighborhood. Pearlberg, known for his legal prowess and kind-hearted nature, passed away on October 9, 2022.

A Lifelong Advocate for Justice

Pearlberg dedicated his career to fighting for justice and righting wrongs. One of his notable endeavors was his involvement in the exoneration efforts for Leo Frank, a Jewish man who was wrongfully convicted for a murder in 1915. Pearlberg tirelessly worked alongside Rabbi Lebow and former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes to clear Frank’s name, shedding light on the underlying antisemitism that led to his tragic fate. His commitment to this cause and his legal expertise made a lasting impact on the community.

Remembered as a Mentor and Performer

Aside from his legal accomplishments, Pearlberg was known for his willingness to mentor young lawyers and his passion for the arts. He had a prominent role in numerous productions at Marietta’s Strand Theatre, showcasing his acting talent. His neighbor and close friend, Ann Roland, fondly remembers his ability to bring joy and laughter to those around him. Pearlberg’s dedication to his craft extended beyond the courtroom, and he left a lasting impression on stage.

A Man of Faith and Family

Pearlberg’s strong faith was evident in his daily life. Although he wore a mezuzah every day, he attended the Methodist church with his beloved late wife, Patti. In a touching gesture, the rabbi consecrated and blessed a burial ground in an Episcopal Church cemetery, allowing Pearlberg to rest beside his wife.

Pearlberg’s devotion to his family was unwavering. He was a loving father to his two sons and a doting grandfather to his six grandchildren. Family trips were cherished traditions, with annual visits to Breckenridge, Colorado, and later to Captiva Island, Florida. His playful nature and his ability to bring smiles to the faces of his grandchildren earned him the endearing title of “the silly granddad.”

A Lasting Legacy

Van Pearlberg leaves behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, and laughter. His impact on the Marietta community and the legal field will be remembered for years to come. He will be deeply missed by his loved ones, including his sisters Ronnie Dinin and Andrea Weiser, his daughter Erica DeSimone, and his extended family.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in honor of Pearlberg to The Strand, a theater close to his heart. More information can be found on their website at www.earlsmithstrand.org.

During this difficult time, the Church Street neighborhood stands in solidarity, mourning the loss of a remarkable individual. Van Pearlberg’s memory will forever be cherished, and his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
