Tom Johnson, a beloved writer and comedian known for his work on shows like “The Daily Show” and “Lopez Tonight,” has passed away at the age of 55. Johnson was found dead in his Los Angeles home on January 14, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and wit.

Born as Thomas Martin Johnson in Fairfax, Virginia, on July 25, 1968, Johnson’s comedic talents were evident from a young age. After graduating from the University of Missouri, he embarked on a successful career in comedy, becoming a writer, director, and mentor for the Network Comedy Troupe.

Johnson’s big break came in 1996 when he was hired as part of the original staff for Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” with Craig Kilborn as the host. He continued his work on the show when Jon Stewart took over in 1999, writing over 1,200 episodes and earning two Emmy Awards and two Peabody Awards for his contributions. Not only did Johnson excel behind the scenes, but he also made appearances on camera as the anonymous hacker Lord Viper Scorpion in select episodes.

Throughout his career, Johnson made significant contributions to various television programs, including “Talk Show With Spike Feresten” and “Lopez Tonight,” where he served as head writer. He also co-created “The Jeselnik Offensive” alongside Anthony Jeselnik, taking on the roles of executive producer and head writer. Although Johnson’s creativity knew no bounds, he faced controversy when a sketch from “The Jeselnik Offensive” resulted in his ban from New Zealand.

In addition to his television work, Johnson was one of the authors of the New York Times bestseller “America: The Book” and contributed to events like the Grammy Awards, Comedy Central Roast, and MTV Movie Awards.

Known for his charismatic stage presence, Johnson delighted audiences across the United States as a touring comedian. He made memorable appearances on popular shows such as A&E’s “Caroline’s Comedy Hour” and various Comedy Central specials, often performing alongside his ventriloquist dummy named Burnie.

Tom Johnson is survived by his wife Rozie Bacchi, sisters Pamela Dawn Foels and Cindy Johnson Doerr, brothers-in-law Stephen Foels and Steve Doerr, nieces Jennifer Lynne Sims and Amanda Jean Strathman, and their spouses. He also leaves behind great nieces Cameron Hazel Sims and Zoey Violet Strathman.
