Los Angeles [US], January 27 (ANI): Rod Holcomb, an Emmy-winning ER director who also worked on episodes of Lost, China Beach, Wolf, and The Six Million Dollar Man, has passed away at the age of 80, according to Hollywood reporter.

Holcomb, who directed hundreds of television programs throughout his career, passed away on January 24 in Los Angeles following a protracted illness, as announced by the Directors Guild of America.

Reflecting on his father’s legacy, Holcomb’s son said, “Dad was an inspiration to me. He always stayed humble and never lost his desire to mentor young people who were making their way into the industry.” Holcomb’s manager, Geoffrey Brandt, added, “Our gentle giant and kind friend passed away peacefully with his wife Jane, son Josh, and daughter Natasha by his side.”

The DGA President, Lesli Linka Glatter, expressed deep sorrow at the loss of Rod Holcomb and acknowledged his significant contributions to the television industry. She stated, “Rod’s influence as a pilot director on shows like China Beach and ER, among many others, resonated deeply with directors and audiences alike, leaving a cultural imprint. His pioneering use of Steadicam and other techniques brought a more cinematic style to television, helping establish a visual aesthetic that continues today.”

Glatter also highlighted Holcomb’s dedication to guild service, including his role as the co-chair of the Television Creative Rights Committee, where he fought for important protections for television directors. She emphasized that his caring leadership and directorial mastery would continue inspiring directors for generations.

Throughout his career, Holcomb received four Emmy nominations and two DGA nominations for his work on ER, China Beach, and The Pentagon Papers. He also directed episodes of various popular shows, such as Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, The Mentalist, The Good Wife, and NCIS: Los Angeles, to name a few.

Rod Holcomb is survived by his wife, Jane, his son Josh, daughter Natasha, and five grandchildren.
